Class: Intermediate Visual Communication Design I
Timeline: August 2021 - December 2021
Project: Brand Identity Design
Software: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign
Description
For this project, the objective was to gain an understanding of visual identifiers that can be strategically implemented to represent a brand. These identifiers can then be used to communicate a message, visually.
This project provided me with the opportunity to explore numerous visual communication techniques relative to a particular organization. I tailored my studies to the Shaw Jewish Community Center of Akron, Ohio—as I felt they might benefit from a brand identity redesign.
By the conclusion of this project, I had curated a booklet that contained all of the necessary assets for brand application and implementation. This booklet includes valuable information pertaining to all of the key elements of the branding process, such as the visual mark, color, and potential applications.
Process
When developing a brand identity system, it was important to understand just how that system would function upon implementation. In a way, my booklet is comparable to a tool kit. It provides potential users with the insights and flexibility necessary to curate solutions relative to the brand in question.
As a designer, it was up to me to provide the tools for users to do just that. These included a unique visual mark with color variations; a stationery set; icons; a prototype publication cover and webpage; an animation sequence; signage; and both two- and three-dimensional applications, among other things.
Each of these tools must function independently, as well as in conjunction with other assets, to ensure the identity comes across as both professional and cohesive.

Reflection
I quite enjoyed this semester. I rediscovered my passion for identity design and am grateful to have gained a wealth of information in this particular area of study. I especially enjoyed the ongoing nature of this project, as it afforded me the opportunity to delve into the subtleties of the brand. At the 2022 CSCA Creative Best Awards, my identity redesign received the Award of Excellence. While humbled by this honor, I am tremendously proud of and excited about the work that I completed, and look forward to exploring this facet of design in the future.
